Apa nak dikatakan lagi?

When comedy’s a crime and sedition is a joke.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has to make up his mind fast or face fire as the temperature rises. On one hand we have Namewee, the Chinese rapper who had once been let off the hook despite producing a video that insulted the national anthem. He is again in the spotlight for producing a racially charged rap piece, which demeans Islam and the Malays. On the other hand there is blogger Hassan Skodeng, who is facing criminal charges for making light of the Malaysian energy monopoly, Tenaga Nasional's legal action against the WWF's Earth Hour campaign.

IN America even the little guy does not begrudge Bill Gates. But what if Microsoft's founder, and all the other high-tech millionaires and CEOs and those successful at business, were of a separate, distinct ethnicity? Imagine that almost everyone with private-sector wealth had a religion, a diet or an appearance different from that of the ordinary American and that they rarely intermarried.
There are countries like that. They have what author Amy Chua calls "market-dominant minorities." Think of the Chinese in Burma and Indonesia, the English in Zimbabwe and South Africa, Indians in Kenya and Fiji, Jews in Panama and Russia.

PAS just concluded annual general assembly (AGM) spells one thing – next year’s party election will be a hotly contested. The reason is simple – the young liberals who are loyal to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – will once again attempt to take the leadership and re-chart the party’s future. The setting up of supporters wing with membership comprising non-Muslims does not go down well with some young liberals as this will not only ‘melt’ PAS’ policies and its fundamentals but more so weaken and reduce PKR’s support. PAS new wing is an open set up where the party will register any non-Muslims regardless of their political inclinations and ideologies who want to stay under its umbrella.
|
Things do not look rosy for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in the next general election as PAS, one of the three parties in the loose alliance has officially opens its doors to non-Muslims. Establishing another wing in the party called Supporters Wing, the party now gives Chinese and Indians who are disappointed with their respective parties or who need a political platform a chance to continue their political struggles. Although the members of the wing know well that they have no right to vote nor have a say in PAS policies, the platform is seen as a way out for them to show their displeasure to their former parties. PAS, in setting up the wing, aims to widen its support base, extending it to the non-Muslims, a move which the party made in the eighties but fizzled out due to lack of support and the party image as an Islamic fundamentalist.

KOPITIAM TALK - 14 Jun 2010

PAS opens its doors to the non-Muslims with an offer of justice and fairness for all as propagated by Islam. Not even mentioning its principle objective of setting up an Islamic state, the party pledges to give justice starting with developing human capital that fulfill a holistic human. At the same time, the party would get closer to the Malays in urban and rural areas as the party claimed they had not live the way of true Islam since they had been living in thick ignorance. Delivering his policy speech entitled Islam Is Just For All, the party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang also said the New Economic Model was just a reflection of the repeat of Malaysian Incorporated and the privatization concept. “History had shown past Islamic civilizations with the concept of multi-religious and multi-racial had benefited the Chinese and Indians.
|
PAS is expected to chart a guideline on how the non-Muslims who support the party could further contribute and strengthen the party base without compromising its Islamic principles. The setting up of Dewan Penyokong Bukan Islam (the Non-Muslims Support wing) is expected to take centre-stage in the party’s three-day assembly beginning Friday in Kota Bharu.Delegates are expected to stress to the party leadership on the importance of such wing to give the party a wider base support given the fact that support from Malays are still off the target. PAS leaders and members admitted despite the good showing in the March 2008 general election, the party is said to receive only approximately 35 percent Malay support of the total Malay electorates. The percentage is similar to its partner in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) while Umno, the backbone of ruling coalition gets far more than that.

Tamrin Tun Abdul Ghafar has written an open letter to Minister of Islamic Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department calling for the cancellation of football betting license given to Berjaya Group. He said as the Vice President of Association of Former Umno Members of Parliament (PAKKU), he had made the announcement of PAKKU’s decision on the matter but no media carried the news. He added that as such, he had to resort to the open letter and delivered it to Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom on Wednesday morning just before the Cabinet meeting last week to make known PAKKU’s stand on the issue in line with the Islamic principles of reminding each other of good and bad deeds. “The media – print and electronic – were as though directed to black-out any views against the government pertaining to this issue. We hope with this letter, the Minister entrusted and responsible for safeguarding Islam would take the necessary actions with wisdom and precautions on protecting Allah’s teachings and humans’ needs.

BN’S UPHILL BATTLE TO TAKE SELANGOR
What’s the latest in Selangor? Whether you like it or not, the reality that are being talked about at the corridor of the Mall shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur is that Barisan Nasional (BN) is facing an uphill battle to retake Selangor. The reason is simple – the state which is the backbone of BN – is in a ‘bad shape’ with infighting and battling each other so as to be seen as ‘THE MAN’ to be truly fighting to ‘demonise and destabilise’ the state Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government. The state leaders seem to be fighting to outdo each other without really synchronizing their acts nor having the knowledge what the other is doing and what are the implications of their actions. Retaking Selangor is priority as spelled out openly by BN chairman who is also president, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak while BN succeeded in taking back Perak, even through court’s decision.

Finding Unity in Malaysia's Diversity
In contrast to the impressions left by some international reporting, in the hours and days after the recent vandalism of churches and other places of worship in Malaysia, the true spirit of our nation has shone through. Across religions and races, Malaysians have spoken with a unified voice in condemning the despicable acts of a few. Citizens have joined as one to assert that vandalism is never an acceptable way to express diverse views or resolve differences.
